MF 175 fuel gauge

Having now run my diesel MF 175 out of fuel once too often, it's time to get the gauge working again. It was flaky when I first got the tractor 10 or so years ago, but then quit working altogether. Before I blunder into this, I thought I'd seek wisdom here!

Can anybody forward or create some quick "how to" advice on diagnosing the problem? It looks like the gauge and sender are both available for pretty reasonable prices, but I'm not sure how to get at them to test/replace them.

Thanks!
Steve

With the tractor running, ground the wire at the tank sending unit, dash gauge should move to full if gauge is working correctly. If not see if the oil pressure switch behind the dash is working, and has 12 volts, that switch feeds the charging system too. Some diesel tractors use the pressure switch instead of a key switch. Most fuel gauge trouble is the sending unit, the floats fill up and sink, or the resistance box wears out inside over time.
Hood needs to come off to get it replaced..

Okay, many thanks. I'm hoping the "hood" is just the top panel over the tank (and hoping those screws cooperate!).

One more questions: do I really have to remove the WHOLE hood, or is it sufficient to remove the section at the top?

Ah, bummer! Mine has an industrial loader, and taking the whole thing off looks like a LOT of work to get a working fuel gauge. Hmmm....
