Hi,new to forum. My John Deere 317,
(not sure what year) keeps stopping
suddenly for unknown reason.I have
replaced battery,coil,capacitor
condensor,plug,wire,circuit
breaker,and ignition starter
switch.when it breaks down it seems
to get too hot and it will backfire
really loud..i just replaced starter
swith and it got fried(see pic) any
ideas ? Thanks

When you replaced the ignition switch, did you also replace the female terminal in the harness plug that plugs on to the switch? If not, it will overheat again as the connection will not be tight.

It's unusual for an ignition switch to do that on a garden tractor. Could have started as a bad switch, or there is an unusually high amp draw on "something". Possibly the PTO clutch drawing too much amperage, but that's just a guess, don't replace it without testing first!

The backfiring is a result of intermittently loosing ignition while it is running, filling the muffler with gas, igniting when the ignition resumes. Once you find the electrical problem, that will stop.
 
The JD are famous for the switch burning up,but a new switch every 20 years is not too bad. Put a new connector on the wire too.
