When I was in high school, in auto shop class the teacher showed us how to use a growler to check the armature of a generator. The only thing i remember is one day it got hot and began to give off smoke. Has anyone ever used one of these?

I used one in shop class too. Was back in the 70's. You placed a armature in it, turned on the power and held a hacksaw blade over it to check for a magnetic field.

My dad had one, it seemed to disappear somewhere.

Yes, hacksaw blade for checking magnetism and light with probes for checking continuity.

I have a couple of them my brother found at auctions. One is an off brand, the other is a Snap-On. I also have a armature lathe that I use on occasion.

Used them in the Navy 45 yrs ago. Memory is stretching here...wound motor armature with shorted windings will create a local current path between shorted windings. If a changing magnetic field is passed through the short CIRCUIT current will flow and produce it's magnetic field which will make something ferrous like a hacksaw blade "growl" in proximity of the shorted windings.
