Ford 661 ignition problem

I have a Ford 661 tractor that was running rough. I replaced points, plugs, wires, condenser and rotor and it ran fine pulling a bush hog for over 2 hours even though I just guessed at the points gap since I didn't have a feeler gauge available at the time.
Later after repairing a leaking gas tank and properly adjusting the points gap, it ran rough so I adjusted points again and it ran fairly well for a short period and then died. When I tried to start it it seemed to want to backfire a little. I replaced and adjusted points again and it started and ran for a bit and died like it was out of gas and would not restart.
After checking points I looked at the rotor and noticed that the square side that slides over the keeper clip was chipped. I replaced the rotor with a new one and it started and ran for a short period and died again. The new rotor was also chipped which seemed to create a miss fire or out of sequence fire.
Can you advise me as to a solution or cause ? I bought ignition parts from Tractor supply and the package indicated that it was for the 600/800 series.
Could the rotor keeper be worn thus causing the rotor to slip and then chip?

Buying ignition parts from tractor supply is where your problem is. Those parts come form the land of almost right so poorly made and not worth the them to install them. Go to a O'Reilly's or NAPA and buy a good set.

The rotor and that springy keeper need to fit correct and good and tight, I'm not sure why yours go bad (if its correct rotor ??), maybe junk parts or maybe there's a problem on top the distributor shaft ?? I have seen worn distributor shaft bushings that cause cap and rotor problems plus the points gap jumps around causing misfire or erratic timing.
