Ford 8N Oil Valve Cover Seals

Hello fellow tractorteers,

I am still amidst my 1952 8N restore and I have a question. Today was oil pan seals, crank shaft seals and oil valve cover seals. I have questions about the oil valve seals themselves.

First, and this may sound dumb, but you do not have to soak those two cork oil valve cover seals before installing them do you?

And secondly, the design of the cover seems like it is designed to leak. and it almost seems like my valve covers are warped. I replaced the seals with cork ones, but the covers don't seem to seal that tight. Is that normal? Does anyone know the actual torque value for those nuts? And lastly, does anyone have any secrets to sealing them better if there is a better way besides the replacement cork seals?

Thanks friends, I couldn't have gotten this far without your input!

You need to make sure the covers are flat, lay them on a bench to check them. I have used the cork gaskets on 2 tractors with no
problems. I use #2 permatex (non hardening) and glue them to the cover. I then put a thin bead of #2 permatex on the gasket and
put it on the tractor. i also use a little permatex under the washer on the bolt holding them on. Use a ? inch washer. I saw this
procedure on the Ford N series tractor sites how to section.
