I need help with my diesel. I replaced one of the batteries in my electric start. And when I polarized the generator and got the spark at the regulator all seemed okay. When I started the tractor the generator got very hot and started to smoke. Even after the tractor was shut down I had to disconnect the wire at the generator- the battery wire. I'm kinda scratching my head.
Serial Number List for John Deere: Model 730

Two 12s or four 6s? Do you have the ground wire hooked up between the batteries? Ground between them if two, between the second and third with four.

First of all, as the other poster asked, 4 - 6's or 2 -12's?

Are you SURE you installed the new battery with it's posts connected to the cables the same way as the old one?

WHY did you attempt to polarize the system if all you did was replace a battery?

HOW did you know which terminal (A1 or A2) to polarize to? I've been around/worked on these DEERE 24 V systems all my life and can NEVER remember which one, have to figure it out or look it up every time!

Two twelves, and yes I'm 100 percent sure they are hooked up correctly. I was always told to polarize all my two cylinders gas or diesel. It didn't seem to be charging my red light wasn't on. I only ASSUMED had the right tabs on the regulator.

The charge light should come on as soon as the switch is turned on, and actually contributes a slight polarizing current to the generator.

The fact that it didn't come on was NOT related to a need to polarize, something else was wrong, from a burned out lamp, to a wiring or generator issue.

I dunno what went on, if the contacts in the cutout relay got welded by improper polarizing, maybe the generator simply burned out? Even bad bearings will burn out a generator.

Anyhow, it's NOT necessary to repolarize simply because a battery has been changed, although it certainly doesn't hurt, if done properly. Those 24 Volt systems aren't very forgiving and "flashing" the wrong terminals can certainly "let the smoke out!

If you care to email me [email protected] I'll forward some info that may be of help.
