1968 FORD 2000 Starter

I have a 1968 Ford 2000 gas tractor. The starter will not engage until after 10-20 attempts at starting. I checked the gear and it is not worn and the contact on the lever that pushes the gear out is not stuck or burnt. I am not a mechanic and could use some suggestions on what to do.

Thanks

I do not know that tractor as such so just taking a educated guess. If it has the type of solenoid with the electromagnet pull that pulls the bendex out to engage the flywheel it could be getting weak or it could be rusty in side which will cause it to bind and not pull like it should

Take the starter off, turn the drive gear with your fingers. It should be moderately difficult to turn one direction, and impossible to turn the other direction without rotating the starter. If it is sloppy easy to turn, or will turn both directions, it is bad.

That part is field replaceable, might get lucky and find one at the auto supply, or Tractor Supply. Cheap and easy fix.
