I have a John Deere 40 U tractor for more than 15 years, never know how to fix it in the right way only by poking around until it stopped run then called the one who sold it to me to come to fix it,and not only the parts been repalced were older poorer and weaker with a lofty price, but every time it came back some original parts were missing. That was when I tried to see if I can do some thing my self to fix it. And my latest trouble, about a year ago, I had started the tractor, pulled out of the shed, and it stopped about 20 yards from the shed, and I put the gear back to neutral, and tried to start again, but it never
sarted since, I recharged buttery(12V),tried it few times, never had the starter cranking, only the positive pole of the buttery was burnning hot. can some one give me some leads to the understanding of what could be gone wrong.
Thank You

If only ONE battery cable or battery cable connection is HOT that would typically mean a dirty/loose/"poor"connection at that point.

I've linked a service manual below, while published by IH, the info applies to your little DEERE, as well.

Also, with the ignition "OFF", try rocking the tractor back and forth in the highest gear and note whether the engine fan moves.

This proves the engine isn't stuck and will pop the starter drive loose, if it happens to be jammed against the flywheel.

Thank you for all the valuable informations and advices, I'll try them this weekend to see the result.
