Preparing for winter

Last winter my 2N sit in the shed all winter idle because it needed new tires on it. This spring I had a new set of 11.2X28's put on it and have been thinking about loading them with RV antifreeze since it is nontoxic and environmentally friendly. If I do load the tires will I still need tire chains? Do chains cause damage to tires? If I load my tires is it really nessasary to also use chains for snow removal? I was told by a not so reliable source that chains will shorten the life of your tires. :?: :?: :?:

Location is everything. If you have level ground and get little snow, you will be fine. But here in New England you would surly need chains. I have used chains every winter for many years and nave not noticed much wear.

Yes, chains make a huge difference under some conditions. Just a little spin and you are on ice. I was once pushing snow banks back in the rain using a pretty big 4WD wheel loader. As soon as I got the front wheels onto the ice under the snowbank that was as far as it would go. You need special chains,as the cross chains of the plain ladder type will drop between the bars on the tires.

First year I had my Super C I didn't have chains and it worked good in just snow. Next year there was some ice and I couldn't go anywhere.

JIm--last winter was the exception! I never plowed once and never started the sleds---what a strange winter
I am in NW Mass.

Here are some things to think about and other options.
#1 winter grade wiper fluid will be close to as heavy as the RV antifreeze at well under half the cost and if you find it on sale it could well be 1/3 the cost.

#2 in snow unless packed down the fluid should be enough.
#3 on ice the fluid will not cut it and you will need the chains.

That all said send me an e-mail and I'll send you a page that show how to fill tires with fluid and it has 3 or 4 ways to do it.

Here's my take on windshield washer fluid, 1... Every jug of windshield washer has a skull and cross bones on the warning label, which stands for poison. 2... I have I have on idea how toxic that stuff really is, and I have critters on my place that my wife thinks more of than me. If anything happened to them because it drank WWF that come from a punctured tire I would be looking for a new home. 3... RV antifreeze is nontoxic, not hat I would drink it to find out. 4... It is rated at -50 so I could cut it 50/50 with water so it still wouldn't freeze in my part of the country. 5... And with all due respect to my elders and fellow members I do know how to load tractor tires, thanks everyone for your replies.

All the wiper fluid I have ever used does not say it is toxic. As for animals I probably have as many if not 10 times more then you have. I have yet to have any animals die from it
