Oil Bath Air Filter Question

Hi Everyone,

I've been doing some maintenance on a homemade tractor my Grandfather built (more on that Here) and recently decided to take a look inside the air filter.

Unfortunately, there wasn't any oil in it. I plan on cleaning the reservoir and putting fresh oil in, but there is something I'd appreciate having a little guidance on.

Take a look at these two pictures. It appears that the air pipe comes down below the oil level.

Is this correct? I'm not very familiar with how oil bath air cleaners work, but I would have thought there needed to be some clearance between the end of the pipe and the oil level.

The power unit for this tractor is an IY-69 Continental. Unfortunately I haven't found any literature on the air cleaner. If anyone has any insight on this matter, it would be much appreciated.

all air goes through oil where fine particles remain in oil and bigger dirt gets stopped in mesh with no oil in bowl a lot of fine dust has entered cylinders

I have looked at photos and there is no pre cleaner which throws a lot of dust out by centrifugal force
I am not picking faults with what is a very good machine

Up inside the canister, see the pleated mesh? That will eventually get packed with dirt and need to be cleaned. Some will come out, some won't and have to be cleaned with it in there. Being this tractor probably hasn't see much hard dirty work, it may be OK, but worth taking a look at. If it's dirty, take it off, try to blow it out if it's dry. Or hit it with a pressure washer, wash it in a parts washer, whatever it takes.

The oil bowl looks really rusty. I suspect there is a pin hole rusted in it. If it's rusted out, scrape and sand it out on the inside, apply a thin coat of epoxy, like JB weld. Fill it with engine oil up to the line.

If there was clearance between the pipe and the oil, your cleaner would have no effect. Incoming air is forced to draw through the oil, pulling some of it up into the steel mesh. It's the combination of the oil, on the mesh, that's filtering the air. Then at shut down, the oil drains back down, and the dirt settles out.

Thanks so much everyone for your replies! Your helpful advice has cleared everything up. :)

Thanks Steve@Advance for the cleaning tips. You're right in that this tractor hasn't seen much dirty work. All the same, I will definitely do a thorough cleaning of the mesh, as well as the oil bowl.
