FORD 8N PTO Seal Replacement

Hey all,

I am in the middle of repairing and partially restoring my 8n and I have ran into another snag... One of a million it seems!

I am trying to remove the PTO seal and I can't seem to get it apart. There was a retainer ring on the side facing into the tractor and nothing on the outside.

Can anyone tell me what is holding this together and how to pull it apart without damaging it?

I have attached a couple photos if that helps. You can see I need a new PTO Bearing as well lol. Thanks!

There should be a retainer ring on inside and outside of the seal housing that bolts to the rear of the tractor.

Get both retainer rings out, lay a sturdy board on solid floor or ground and lift the shaft/housing assembly (short end of the shaft toward ground) and drop it onto the board. May take several drops but the housing should pop off. The board protects splines on the shaft.

I just did one recently. Original seal is about 3/4" wide. I replaced it with 2 3/8" wide National seals #471829. Open, or spring side of the seal toward inside oil source. I used a large socket and tapped them into the housing. FO-4 I & T manual has good instructions.
