JD Model M brakes, seals, etc

Hello all. I'm having a hard time finding info a few maintenance items for my Model M. First would be the rear axle seals...where can I find them and how do I replace them?

Next: What about replacing the brakes? Cannot find info anywhere on this.

Last but not least: Between the engine and transmission fluid pours out the bottom when I add any. Is this a gasket gone bad? If so...what do I call it when looking for a replacement?

Thanks for the time,

Kelly

Cap'n, I've repaired all sorts of old tractors, but never an "M", as there were never very many around here in my area on the northern prairie.

I've linked the factory parts catalog below, it will show parts breakdowns and give you some idea how the tractor is put together.

Current John Deere part # for the rear wheel seal is AT48334, cost is about $24.

Or, get an SKF 19887 seal through an auto parts store or industrial "bearings and drives" place.

As to the oil leak, there are a couple of gasketed covers on the front of the transmission, inside the main tube frame, plus an input shaft seal that could possibly leak. Are you sure you are not overfilling it?

If you don't already have one, an operator's manual is a good thing. THIS very site sells reprints, or some prefer an original and they often come up on ebay.

You need a shop manual as well, this site sells those, as well, I&T manuals and (typically much better/more thorough OEM version.

Hey Bob. Thanks so much for the reply. It isn't an overfill issue with the transmission....as soon as I add fluid, it pours out of the bottom between the engine and transmission. Any recommendations on breaking the tractor in half to replace the gaskets?

First thing you need to do is get on ebay, Davenports, or YT and order an owners manual, JD service manual and get on jdparts and download the parts book. It's a pdf and it's free!

Rear axle seals are available from Deere or most any good auto parts house. You have to pull the final drives to change them.

New brake disks are not available. You can get new linings that rivet on from Steiners if yours can't be salvaged. Final drives have to come off for those also.

The last question is a puzzle I'm probably not undetstanding correctly. There is only a couple inches of 90wt or better yet 140wt gear oil in the transmission. Fill plug is on the side near the bottom. There isn't enough oil to reach the input shaft except what the gears sling so it can't pour out unless you're talking about motor oil and if it is motor oil your rear seal on the crank is bad.

Morning M-MAN. Thanks for the info. The leak isn't motor oil, it leaks while I'm adding gear oil to the transmission. Pours out as fast as I can add it. I'm going to take a closer look this morning and see if I can pinpoint where exactly its coming from.
