Mastercoat Permanent Rust Sealer

Does the Mastercoaat Permanent Rust Sealer work as advertised? I have some pitted metal. Cost is $37.95 a quart/$120.00 per gallon. I usually use epoxy primer.

When I was picking up paint at the local jobber to paint the body on my dump truck ten years ago, the paint guy told me that I needed acid wash. That was the first that I had heard of it, but I have decided that it is absolutely necessary when painting rusty steel. Yes it does work, there are many brands and they are all based on phosphoric acid, which converts the residual rust to inert iron phosphate. Like anything else it will work only so well, so it will penetrate only so far into rust. You still need to clean off as much as you can. It is more like insurance against rust bubbling up under the paint two years later. Another important thing is to wash it aggressively with water after the recommended contact time, in order to avoid residue when dry. I usually toss small parts in a bucket of water and spray larger ones with my pressure washer. I wipe with alcohol after washing in order to avoid flash rust.

I found Mastercoat at the Charlotte NC Autofair probably 20 years ago. Since then I probably have bought 50 Gals of the stuff. I have coated dozens and dozens of gas tanks inside with it and have used it for just about everything imaginable as far as rustproofing steel. I love it, I swear by it.I keep 3 or 4 qts at all times. CAUTION. Do not get it on your hands or body. Nothing will dissolve it,including gasoline or lacquer thinner.
