C3 Carco winch PTO repair

I have a Carco C3 winch. The PTO or drive shaft of the winch came out of the spline coupling that connects it to the transmission. The shaft bounced around on the differential and wore about halfway through. I'm looking for a replacement or some tips on buildig up the shat without making it brittle or warped. I would appreciate feed back if anyone out there has suggestions. Charlie

You will probably be better off to just replace it.

Why did it come unsplined? Is it too short? If so, that can be corrected by having a new one made.

If you want to try to repair it, find some tubing (not pipe) that will slip over the damaged shaft, do the welding near the ends.

Steve, I was given this machine just to get it off a property for sale. So my forensic autopsy is assuming that in the previous reassembley the wrong pin was used to connect the coupler. It might have been a loose fit or soft metal. It looks like it just fell out letting the coupling vibrate causing stress on the snap ring holding the shaft in the housing. We found no evidence of the snap ring but the groove is in the shaft and it's the only way to hold the shaft in place.

Steve, I finally found a machine shop that has experience with shaft drives. One look at the worn shaft and the machinist shook his head and said it would be difficult to build it up and keep it straight also the spline repair would be expensive. He said find a spline with enough shaft and they would splice it. Says they do it all the time. Charlie
