3010 head bolts

I am overhauling my gas 3010 engine. Do I need to order head bolts or can I go to a local mid state bolt dealer and buy good quality bolts. Tractor is a 1961 and the bolts in it look like regular old bolts.Gr5 and they have a washer under each head. The washer is not built into the head. Local engine guy seems to think regular bolts will be fine. What are your opinion's. Thanks

As long as they are not corroded or the threads rusty, I would not be afraid to use them. You can wire brush the threads, but do not run a die over them!

If it came with grade 5, go back with grade 5. But might want to check what it originally had.

Im having a hard time finding out if they are original I have call John Deere but all they can tell me is early models came with regular gr5 but just want to make certain that I am not going to have to do it twice. There is a lot out of info out there for diesels but not gasers. Thanks for the respone.

Typically cylinder head bolts are not simply a standard bolt, but have a reduced body diameter, I would assume to give the amount of "stretch" desired by the engineers who designed the engine.

Here's what Deere shows as one of the bolts, R42263, 9/16" X 5". Notice the middle of the bolt,(marked "E") has it's diameter reduced from the bolt's standard size of .562" down to .508".

An "off the shelf" bolt won't be made like that and will affect torque/stretch/gasket crush.

While yours is a gasser and the headbolts are probably NOT as critical as with a diesel, I would err on the side of caution and buy the $$$ correct bolts from DEERE.

Also, the bolts are listed grade A17F, which is equivalent to Grade 8.
