Farmall 706 d 282 question

I had some overhaul my engine. Bought an overhaul kit injectors. Repaired the injection pump, had the heads and valves worked, and had the deck resurfaced. They fellow who put the engine together and twice it blew the head gasket. I'm getting the tractor back tomorrow and want to either find a new mechanic or try fixing it myself. My neighbor thought the valves or timing could be so off it may blow he gasket but other than that he didn't think that gasket should have blown under no load. What would you do first or what could cause this? The first time I thought he had the sleeves too high but the next time I saw a picture and the sleeves were much lower. They could still be too high but I'll know more when I pull the head. Ps, anybody who really knows their stuff near the Louisville Ky area who wants a side job, I'd pay good money to get this finished. I have restored the tractor. Looks great. Just need the engine going. Thanks for your help. Scott

Welcome Scott!

Lots of factors can cause head gasket problems!

As you mentioned, liner height must be right. Gasket type and quality play a part. Has the head been magnafluxed and checked for flat? How are the bolts, the threads in the block clean? Were the surfaces properly cleaned?

Overheating is typically the root cause of head gasket problems. Are there any problems with the cooling system? Most engines have steam vent holes along the length of the block. Be sure they are clear and the gasket aligns with all the passages properly.

Then there are the specifics of proper bolt torque. If you don't have a shop manual, it would be a valuable investment! Many diesels have specific torque sequences, requirements, and retorque procedures that must be followed to the letter.

Diesels are very unforgiving of any short cuts or variance of procedures! But get it right and they last a long time.

New head bolts? A lot of guys with problems
of headgaskets on D282 on the RedPower forum
swear by getting Caterpillar bolts for head
bolts. I guess they said they are really
good US made bolts, and don't seem to
stretch like old ones or regular old Chinese
made grade 8's.
