Ford 8N Fuel Valve

Hello all.

I am new to this forum, and to owning a ford 8n. I have been through several issues, the latest of which is gear ring that is dislocated from the fly wheel.

Let me start first by saying I am in no way a mechanic of any type. I am using trial and error and a whole lot of youtube to stumble my way through this.

I have mt tractor all blocked up and ready to be split, but noticed something odd. (Maybe it's just me)

I went to shut off the fuel valve on the back of the sediment bowl and it is already screwed in as tight as it would go. I thought it was odd because I am assuming that when t is screwed in the fuel line is closed, but we have been using the tractor for several weeks now and as far as I know the valve has always been screwed in tight.

My question is this... First, can anyone confirm that screwing the valve valve knob tight in towards the sediment bowl is considered the off position? Secondly, if it has been in the off position how am I able to run the tractor? Thanks all, am looking forward to hearing from you!

Jeff

Yes, in is off. You likely have a wrong seat in there thereby leaking by. Time for a new one. Not much fun when the valve is left open, the float
sticks and you dump all the gas on the barn floor. Quite unsafe :(

Yes turned in should be off but who knows what has been done to it that would make it not work.
I will say this before you do much buy the I-T FO-4 manual it will help you a whole lot.

Also it is best to drain the fuel tank before you try to split the tractor since you will need to remove the hood to split it easier.
As for the ring gear what I do to install a new one is put the flywheel in the freezer and let it sit over night in it. I then the next day put the new ring gear in the over turn it to 500 degrees and wait till it get up to heat and turns of the heating on it own. I then pull the flywheel out of the freezer and lay it on something flat tha twill to burn and then take the ring gear and drop it on the flywheel and let it sit till both are room temp.

Thanks for the advice, that's awesome. I have a friend who is a diesel mechanic who is going to install the ring gear on the flywheel for me.

I have another dumb question. Once I started unscrewing the fuel shut valve it seemed like I could screw it right out of the side of the sediment bowl. Is this true? How much do you unscrew the fuel shut valve to get it to the fully open position? Thanks for your help!

On that shut off there should be a packing nut behind the shut off. 2 turns out for normal operation if it has the correct shut off and then all the way out for reserve. You should not be able to screw it all the way out with out also taking out the packing nut

I recently also found a copy of the Ford 8N Service Training Manual that gives more details than the IT manual but can't recall where I found it. But this was not advertised to be the last one so apparently there are more available.

Replace the entire sediment bowl assembly (it unscrews from tank) BUT carefully drain the gas BEFORE removing the assembly as any gas still in tank WILL come rushing out and go everywhere (including on your hands while you attempt to quickly screw it back in) on the floor, on your shoes (soaking your socks), run down your arms soaking your sleeves..... In others words there ain't no way the boss lady gonna let you in the house while you are still dressed and been hosed off OUTSIDE LMAO

This site sells them :)

As a side note I have lost a few of the knobs as that lil screw backs out all by it's self so I now lock-tight screw in BEFORE I use the tractor.
