Have a Japanese diesel with a cast iron head. Replacing the head gasket, motor has about 1500 hours. Cleaned and checked the deck and head surfaces with a straight edge, good shape -- nothing over .001". Gasket apparently failed between coolant passage and bore, was getting coolant in exhaust.
The 35-old gasket was metal, sandwiched under some kind of bonding material. The new gasket is different. Has copper sealing rings around the coolant passages and push-rod holes. Then has metal rings around the cylinder bores. The rest of the gasket looks like typical gray gasket material. Got it from Southern Global -- the only source available for this tractor.
Question is should I use a thin coating of spray sealant (or other sealant) on the new gasket or just place it without sealant? - thanks.
