generator runs after polarizing

I have a 45 farmall A with a positive ground system after I polarize the generator it spins like an electric motor! the battery starts to drain and terminals get hot. what can it be?? thanks!!

If the genny spins (like a DC motor that it is) that means voltage is getting applied from its ARM post to case frame ground.

If the VR's internal Cutout Relay is stuck closed, that can cause the genny to turn (or try since belts too tight) and drain the battery and heat up the genny and wiring.

Normally the VR's internal Cutout Relay is OPEN (until genny turns and makes sufficient voltage) so battery voltage present on the BAT terminal DOES NOT transfer over to the GEN/ARM terminal leading to the Gennys ARM post. However if its stuck closed and you turn off the tractor, the battery voltage on BAT connects to ARM and she tries to spin.

Did you polarize by jumping from BAT over to GEN/ARM on the VR?????????????

Is it a 3 terminal (BAT FLD GEN) or a 4 terminal (BAT LOAD FLD GEN) VR???? Sure its wired right??? On some 4 terminal GEN/ARM is underneath or off on one corner by itself.

Sure the VR is suitable for your polarity???????????????

See if it stops spinning (or trying) if you remove the wire from GEN/ARM on VR that wires to gennys ARM post??? If so the VR's internal Cutout Relay is stuck closed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its supposed to open when tractors not running

If the genny want polarized correct and you ran the tractor the VR may be toast and/or the cutout relay may have welded shut

I'm sure I missed some other possibilities so maybe the other gents can add to this, but it may be the Cutout Relay inside the VR is stuck closed especially if it was ran at wrong genny polarity.
