TO35 w an idiot mechanic...me

Yesterday this forum helped get the tractor running. In it all I realized the distributor (not cap) was turning as not the right clamp just a hose clamp and not tightening enough to hold it. In my attempt to fix I puled the distributor out, this is where idiot comes in.

How do I get the shaft to match up where it should be with gear in hole?

This is a perfect example of not messing with things you know nothing about.

Any help much appreciated and thank you.

Turn the engine over til number one cylinder is on top dead Centre, on compression
stroke. Note where number one plug wire is on distributer cap. Insert distributer
into its hole without the cap on, such that the rotor is lined up where number one
plug wire is on the cap. You may have to try a few times since most drive gears are
helical cut and the rotor will turn slightly as the distributer is lowered into
place. I'm sure there will be a more clear response soon. Ben

Thank you for response.
Been looking for the flywheel timimg hole plug. Does the to35 have?
I have 4 books and they are all so confusing to a non mechanical mind...so many models.
I am freaking out, so much time, money, and energy and I keep going backwards!
Can I do this with one body? Also, tractor has a metal frame like cage and I cannot look into number 1. I also cannot remove grill or lift hood enough to remove battery.
Thank you

A person should NEVER pull a distributor with out.
#1 getting the #1 cylinder up at TDC on the compression stroke.
#2 should also mark where #1 nipple is on the cap on the distributor base so as to know right where it needs to go back in.
That said you should mark on the side of the distributor right where the #1 nipple is. Then get as said the #1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke. Then you have to try to set the distributor in so that the rotor will line up with the mark on the side of the distributor so that it will be in timing. I have had to fix problems like your having many times due to some one doing as you did and not knowing it has to be in just right or you are in trouble. At this point it would be a very good idea yo get your self an I-T manual for that tractor before you do much more

Don't panic, this is easy...

The timing hole is down below the starter, a metal plug if it's still in there, just pop it out. Seeing the numbers on the flywheel is sometimes hard, but they're there. When you find them, find 0 and mark it with chalk or white paint.

Then pull the front spark plug, hold your finger over the hole, turn the crank pulley with the big bolt in the center, or any way you can turn the engine through. When you feel compression pushing against your finger, you are coming up on compression stroke. Keep turning until you see the mark. As you approach top center, the engine will get easier to turn. You can really just feel it if you cant see the mark.

Look at the distributor cap, see which terminal # 1 wire is in, put the distributor in with the rotor pointing to that terminal. Adjust the distributor until it starts with out kicking back, and sounds good.

Easy...

As your handle "Old" I am. Your so right I should not pulled the distributor. Guess I got cocky as you and other yesterday helped my problem and in this realized that the wrong clamp was used allowing the distributor to spin slowly adding to the problem. Possibly the problem itself at that point, as it was ideling and running. I found by ear the right spot and the wanted, on other's advice to use a different clamp on hand and in this... Well, here I am.....
Operator manual - I have but no help
Service manual - I have but no help

Thanks for all your help, I'm going to try this again and appreciate your advise.
I have CVS and stress sends me to ER with unstoppable uncontrollable cycles of vomiting. This is so stressful. Wanted so much to use tractor this summer and as I have been working so long on it and yesterday was the closest ever - then this!
I have physically lost over 120 lbs on this project.

I worried as brother told me I probably ruined the engine doing this.

My next post may be Tractor for Sale!

Thanks you so much.

Thanks and I found the IT manual and wonder how I did not have already. Great advise and thanks for your help.

if I found starter it is connected to + battery and coil. And mounted under steering console and no plug anywhere to be found or hole. Any ideas?

I just another new to me tractor toady. Got it as a ran when parked tractor so it did not run when I loaded it up at around 1pm. Got it home and parked the truck and trailer to come in and cool off. Just came back in form messing with it and installed a battery hooked up the gas line which was off. Cleaned the points and noticed the distributor would turn real easy to got a screw driver and tighten it up. Hot wired it and it fired up. Messed with the carb and timing a bit and then drove it off the trailer. I let it run till it ran low and gas. Unhooked the hot wire and came in to cool back off. But yes I have been doing stuff with engine since I was 10-12 years old and started with lawn mowers and have worked my way up from there

Not sure what your asking on this one?? My e-mail is always open if you need more help or I have even helped people by way of phone calls which some times help more then reading on here
