how to count cylinders, left to right or right to left.

Hello to anyone out there that can help. First, I would like to say that I am not much of a mechanic but I try. Looking at my tractor, which end do I begin counting the cylinders? Closest to the radiator as number 1 ? Or do I count them the normal way left to right. I was watching a video on youtube and the person said the number 1 was the closest to the radiator on all tractors. Could someone clarify this for me?

This would be for an inline engine but how does it work with a V type engine that 2 cylinders are directly across from each other, whitch bank left or right would have No. 1 cylinder?

With an inline engine, every one I have seen the #1 was at the front of the engine, the end with the pulley, water pump, timing gears, regardless of the orientation of the engine. (front mount, sideways, reversed)

A V engine though can have various means of cylinder counts. Some are odd on one side, even on the other. Some number up one side, then up the other. No real rule on which side #1 is, but "usually" the front most cylinder. Always best to look those up by manufacturer.

First off what tractor do you have?? There are 2 cylinder tractor and 3 and 4 and 6 and V8 so to be able to tell you for sure we need more info. If it is a in line engine #1 is by the radiator. If you have one of the 2 cylinder ones or a V-8 it will be different

It would be a rare "V" type engine (excepting a few very old auto engines and V twin motorcycle engines )that does not have one cylinder bank forward of the other bank by the width of the connecting rod big end.( 1-2 inches), so usually the front cylinder of the most forward cylinder bank is #1.

Spark plugs do not show that difference the I have noticed, some other way to tell without pulling the head?

k, I'll bite. How is pulling the head going to tell you how the manufacture numbered the cylinders?
