Spark on starter

I recently acquired a 1950 8N. It had been running fine but it dies out and appears to be a battery issue. So I need to check the alternator connections. However, I'm noticing a spark on the starter when I fire it up. I know this is not correct, can someone tell me why this is happening and what I need to do.

Dirty connection. You need to remove the cable and clean the end of the cable and the stud/nut with a wire brush.

On "some" tractors (or farmer Bob may have modified the tractor over the years) (not sure of your Ford) the big ungrounded battery cable attaches to the INPUT (NOT to starter) side of a starter switch or solenoid etc and at the same place a wire may be attached that provides battery power up to ignition and light switches or alternator (if no ammeter) etc.

I would remove, clean and wire brush, reattach and tighten each and every starter and starter switch/solenoid connection,,,,,,,,,,,,,Alternators output stud and where its cable attaches to any ammeter or battery or battery side of switch/solenoid,,,,,,,,,,Ground cables,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Battery posts,,,,,,,,,,,,Any wire from battery or switch/solenoids input up to dash (switches etc) and any Neutral or push down starter switches like some Fords have.

I'm NOT a Ford man so this may or may not be correct, trolls or correct police don't have a calf now lol BUT I SUSPECT A LOOSE OR BURNED OR CARBONED UP CONNECTION even if on a Ford.

Where are you seeing the sparks?? If at the cable connection then it is dirty and or loose. If your seeing it in the brush area you could have weak brush springs or brushes tha tare about wore out

I assume you are talking about the cable sparking where it attaches to the stud?

If so, the connection is loose. But be careful trying to tighten it! Possibly the threads are burned below the nut, and trying to tighten it could twist it off or turn it in the case. Instead, take the nut off, clean everything up, be sure it will tighten down on the cable end. If necessary, add a washer to get a good tight fit.

Thanks, I've replaced the connections and it seemed to fix my spark issue. Another issue, I'm not getting output from the alternator. I went ahead and replaced the alternator but it's still not giving me any output. I thought perhaps it was a ground issue but the new alternator (1 wire) does not have a connector so I'll assume it's already grounded. Any advice what to check next?
