41 Farmall H Clutch Question

I am new to these old Farmall's and I have a question that I am sure is pretty common. I searched around and found nothing regarding the answer to my question before I posted here. I apologize in advanced if this has been asked before. I have noticed that when I depress the clutch on my 41 H that I have to wait 3 or 4 seconds to actually try and shift into gear. I noticed if I don't wait, the gears grind. Is this correct behavior or should it stop immediately so I can shift in? Do H's have a clutch break or not, or by the nature of the tractor is it correct to just have to wait on things to quit spinning.
Thanks again.

That's pretty much the way it is with all of them.

As long as the clutch is fully releasing, which you can determine by putting it in gear, then taking it out, and back in without engaging the clutch. If it grinds the second time, the clutch is not fully releasing. Could need adjusting, but some drag no matter what.

The best solution is to keep it idled down. Be sure the transmission oil is at the proper level and correct viscosity.

I would piggy back that response by saying this:

I bought an M cheap that was going to be for parts. It turns out it was better than mine. It has a leak in the rearend and needs to be topped off every couple of years. I can tell when it is low because it takes an extra long time for the gears to stop moving when you push in the clutch. Check the level in the rearend.

In the up side, you won't have to wait nearly as long in the winter!

I had an issue like that on a tractor of mine the belt pulley brake needed adjusting so it would stop as soon as I pushed the clutch in. As long as the belt pulley is still moving clutch in on mine it would grind gears. I looked at a few pictures I'm not familiar with the H pulley brake system if it even has one. If there's a clutch break I don't know. I didn't see a typical pulley brake on the pictures I saw. I did see a fella that manufactured his own pulley brake maybe you could do that. Just a thought got to be irritating waiting for it to quit spinning.
best of luck Byron
