Splitting Tractor question

We are splitting my John Deere 2640. Everything was going along OK until we got to the point of actually separating the engine from the transmission. We had the rear blocked up and was trying to remove the engine with a hoist, and the engine would not move forward and disengage from the trans. Is there some secret that we don't know about? We had all the bolts loose and the right side seems free but the left side does not want to budge. We kept thinking it was just not pulling out straight and was binding, so we kept pushing it back together then trying to separate it, but it would not come loose for anything. Any thing we're missing?

Thanks in advance.

I do not know that tractor as such but I have split a good many over the years and on many there are a few hidden bolts that if you do not pull them will cause a problem like your having. I have a 1020 in the shop right now waiting on parts that I will be splitting to fix the PTO and also install a new clutch and then check why it is getting coolant into the engine oil

Is there a guide dowel in there that's hanging up? I had the brake piston off a tractor a few months ago that did that. It was loose at the front and bottom but wouldn't come off. I took the air chisel and stuck it in the top rear, gave it a quick buzz and it popped right off.

I had the same problem with a case tractor. I had to pry it apart with a wrecking bar to get it apart. Once I got the first 1/2" it easily came apart.

Proceed with caution! I suspect there is still a bolt holding it. Forcing it could easily break a casting!

Go back and recheck again, bet you will find one. Sometimes they come from the opposite side.

If you can't find it, try posting on the Deere forum below.

is your hoist positioned level, both side to side and engine in line to rear section. double check not missing anything, even something like a throttle linkage, lightly pry on it if needed. Be extra sure all blocking is stable(before proceeding), a little movement can cause major issues, or tipping/falling latter.

couple years ago i helped a guy out who had the same problem you have.
The side channel had a small bolt (3/8" or so) right around were the tractor splits trough the channel and a bracket or what ever(can't remember) that was bolted to the clutch housing, I took that bolt out and then had no problem rolling the engine forwards

Where are you splitting the tractor???? Right at the back of the engine block and the clutch housing or back at the front of the transmission right behind the gear shifters???? The reason being if your doing a transmission split there are two bolt that go from the rear under the gear shifter cover. Also do you have the starter removed??? The starter nose can catch on the ring gear too.
