Farmall H Steering Wheel

Hi again. Playing now with the steering wheel. Is the original coating rubber or some synthetic product. Except for the cracked area, the coating and the wheel are in good condition. Where cracked, the wheel is rusted somewhat. I have seen coatings re-furbished with gentle heating but I think all those were synthetic. Any hints on what to do with this original steering wheel to bring it back. Not interested in buying new steering wheel, as want to keep this tractor as original as possible.

If you can find a reproduction I think you are better off. Bakelite is something that doesn't seem to stay fixed. I fixed mine with epoxy for plastic and painted it and within a month the cracks started coming back.
 
Thanks. Not sure this wheel was coated with bakelite. It is still fairly pliable coating over the steel wheel. I think bakelite is very hard product. Regards, Jack
 
I used to fix then with body putty and a lot of sanding. Not
anymore. I now order new steering wheels from Steiner tractor
parts. Most of there wheels are priced at 49.95.
 
When my H was restored the bad spots of the steering wheel were cleaned and filled with body putty, painted black and given a coat of clear coat. Still looks good after 5 years. Pete
 

There have been a number of posts about repairing steering wheels with epoxy. You need to grind through the hard rubber that is there now, anyplace where there is a crack, in order to get the steel clean of all rust. If you don't the rust will continue to grow and eventually crack open again.
 
Thanks. The coating on the wheel remains somewhat pliable, not hard. I will tinker with some other parts for a while and mull this over. A replacement wheel in the YT store is about 60$ but that removes the thrill of victory aspect for this project. :D Cheers, Jack
