CASE 480B 188 DIESEL REAR MAIN SEAL LEAKING PLEASE HELP

I recently purchased this tractor/backhoe knowing it had a bad clutch. Before I replaced the clutch I did not notice any oil leak.
Now the clutch works great but oil runs out of the clutch rod hole. I am sure it is engine oil. What could I have possibly done to destroy the rear seal? I did not take off the flywheel and the tractor halves went back together quite easily. I have no confidence that even if I went through the effort again to split the tractor and replace the seal that i would not destroy the new seal? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Well, maybe if you shared why you are sure it is engine oil, since you are asking for advice.

Not real sure you did do anything to the seal... Stuff happens!

Possibly with the clutch bad, you weren't able to run long enough or work it hard enough for the leak to show up.

Might want go through all the usual checks before going back in. Double check the source of the leak, any possibility it is coming from above, like the valve cover, oil pressure gauge line, head gasket, or anything else that could be mysteriously gravity tracking down the back of the engine, something that could have been damaged or disturbed during the split.

How is the oil level? Over full from a pump seal of diesel fuel leaking into the crankcase?

How is the blow-by and crankcase ventilation system? What is the general health of the engine? If it is the rear main, it could be a symptom of a tired engine.

But if all checks out, and the engine is good, no reason a new seal wouldn't hold.

Steve, Thank you for your constructive and helpful reply. The engine runs like a new one no smoke and plenty of power. I did notice that the valve cover vent hose runs between the starter and the engine block. I will check to see if I pinched this hose wile reinstalling the starter.
When I split the case I noticed oil was dripping out of the end of the hollow transmission shaft. I did not pay it much mind but this morning, in addition to the engine oil, approximately a quart of transmission fluid had leaked out in a steady drip. It was parked down hill. Did I knock a plug or something out of the end of the transmission shaft? The engine oil leak only occurs when running. Both are coming out of the clutch shaft hole that is near the bottom of the bell housing. Again thank you for your help.

Well, a little help, thanks. It appears that you have answered your own question. I had a PTO shaft leak on one of my Fords. There is a seal that seals the gap between the main drive shaft tube and the PTO shaft which runs inside of it. I expect that this seal is your problem, It does not get knocked, but it does wear. The parts pages on the CNH site will show you the seal. Whether or not your rear main is leaking, you would certainly want to change that while you are in there.
