730 clutch snap

The clutch on my '59 730 LP was working fine, then overnight it wouldn't snap in while engaging. I have pulled the entire clutch and nothing
seems broken or unduly worn. What is it that actually allows it to snap into place while engaging? What am I looking for? If it is an adjustment
issue, why so sudden? I wouldn't think that minor wear would be that critical. I could engage the clutch but it just would not lock in place.

Well if ya did not find EXTRA pieces and part the go to the other side and check the flywheel and readjust it as it has MOVED and you now have tomuch end play on the crank and tis throws the clutch snap over out of wack.

Yes, it is a hand clutch. No, none of the pieces appear to be broken. If wear is an issue, or flywheel end play, why would it seem to happen overnight? Again, why does the clutch "snap" into place?

Excessive crankshaft endplay CAN happen suddenly if a fiber thrust washer disintegrates.

"SNAP" happens when operating sleeve (3) moves towards pulley far enough that the toggles (20) move past their centerlines and at that point, shove the sleeve TOWARDS the clutch pulley, where it stays until the clutch lever is yanked backwards, and the opposite occurs.

Short of pulling the flywheel, is there an easy way to check for excessive and play and/or the disintegrated thrust washer? This is going to be an "in the field" repair. The clutch fork does have a bit of wear on it. I'm guessing the clutch fork does not have enough travel to push the operating sleeve past center. Can it be adjusted to push the operating sleeve past high center, or would you simply recommend a new clutch Fork? Does a shop manual cover all of this?
Thanks, Matt

" is there an easy way to check for excessive and play"

Simply watch the flywheel as you pull and push the clutch lever. Shouldn't move left and right enough to visibly see movement.

Or check with a dial indicator to be exact.

I can't remember the "spec" offhand, but it isn't much. Hopefully someone will post an exact number.
