801 Ford diesel tractor needs alternator...

I need help on how to purchase a replacement alternator for my 801 Ford diesel tractor. If I take the alternator to an automotive store to have it bench tested (just to be sure that's the problem), would I be able to replace it with an automotive alternator? Will they be able to tell from the old one the voltage, etc. to match it with a replacement?

They can match it up from numbers on the case. If it is a common automotive application they should have it. You may have to swap out the pulley, some will do that for you. Just be sure to check it before you leave in case it is different.

If it is something not automotive or light truck, you may want to take it to a starter/alternator repair shop and let them repair it. The non automotive replacements tend to be pricey and would likely have to be ordered.

Thank you so much! Pretty sure it is a standard automotive alternator. I think we'll snap a photo of it on the tractor before we take it off and head to the parts store. Thanks again!

The plate with the number on the alternator is missing. What kind of info will I need about the tractor to replace the alternator, and can you tell me what size motor it is... I assume it's a 12v system, but what else will I need for the parts house to find an alternator that will work? The old one was a Delco, but that's all the info we could get off of it.

Awesome, thanks! My son is at the parts house right now, they found a 60 amp that looks nearly identical to the one we took off. He's getting it now so $37 bucks and we'll be back in business!
