TO-30 rebuild advice

A while back I spun a rod bearing in my tractor. I took it to a guy (friend of a friend type situation) who put together the rotating assembly for me. There's new sleeves, pistons, bearings, etc. I just picked it up today and noticed he didn't hot tank it first. Doesn't look like he really even cleaned it all that much. My concern is all the little metal pieces in all the nooks and crannies from that bearing. Does it all need to come apart and be tanked, or will it most likely be okay as is? Thanks for any help

By not cleaning the block, there is a very real probability there is still metal shavings in the galleys. A favorite hiding place is the oil pick up screen. A close examination of that will tell a lot. If you find metal there, then you have a valid complaint

What about the rod that spun the bearing? Does it appear to have been cleaned or replaced? If it wasn't reconditioned (which would mean it had been cleaned), then a good chance it was not! Also the crank would have to have been replaced (used) or reconditioned, which it would have come back clean and stamped with under size markings. If both of these did not happen, the engine stands 100% chance of early failure!

This does present a sticky situation. Did you pay for this service or was it a favor type job?

If you paid for it, might want to have a talk with him about what was expected. If you specified you wanted a quality job, I would ask for a do over, even if it meant having to adjust the cost. If you asked for an economy job, well you probably got what you were charged for. Either way, if you take anything apart, he will likely refuse to stand behind anything.

If this was done as a favor, I would go have a talk with him, ask what he did, but not expect much to be done. If it was put back with the bad crank journal and spun out rod, take it somewhere else, explain the situation, get their opinion.
