Crack in Engine Block

I am rebuilding my JD 2640 that has the 276 diesel engine. I was getting coolant in my oil. I was thinking the problem was failed O rings on the bottoms of the wet sleeves. Today I pulled the sleeves and the top O rings were pretty nasty looking........pitted and crudded up and not good looking at all. The bottom two O rings on each piston looked much better.......no visible signs of problem. Which O ring does the most sealing?

Then I discovered cracks in the block in the thin ribs between the cylinders. I took photos and will try to upload. The first photo is of the top deck and the second is at the bottom of the cylinder where the sleeve is supposed to seal. I can see a visible crack in this internal section between the cylinders. Is this fatal? I've heard of guys trying to weld them or JB weld them or push lead into the crack. I dunno.

Is it possible to get a good block for one of these? Or a rebuilt engine? I'm really frustrated at this. Maybe the tooth fairy will bring me a new tractor.

Humblesmith,You might try contacting,Ron Hurst at Chapin Cylinder Head & Block Inc. in Chapin Illinois. They have been in business for years and do great work.I have had them do work for me and was well satisfied with their work. You could contact Ron ,send him your pics and see what he thinks. Loc and Stich could be another repair alternative, but would not easy inside with a angle drill.Another used block that is not cracked might be hard to locate.

Dunno about your JD, but many, many AC WD engines have a similar crack, between cyl, top side. Not an issue, but if it"s on the bottom side, time to find another engine.

Find another block or engine, cracked through the bottom is fatal, looks like it may have been froze at some point, saw a 1010 engine do the same thing, broke between the cylinders like that all the way through the mains.

Common cracks from over heating. You find a large percentage of old Allis and Oliver engines with those cracks and are never a problem. An old time repair when the top crack had separated was tie bolts to draw it back tight. I have done show and tell picture of an Allis engine. When I bored the block on one of my engines to put in larger sleeves I used two tie bolts.

Tie bolts are not use when the crack has not opened up.

I have had a lot of good luck and customer service from broken tractor .com. Ken up there is great and if it can be got he can get it. There has been very few items that he could not get (mainly electrical)

If the end of the crack can be reached . Drill a hole through it to eliminate the stress line and further cracking. Braze the crack together .
