JD 630 Clutch

We are assembling the clutch and pulley assembly to the crankshaft. We seem to have to force the operating sleeve up onto the dust shield. When assembled everything is so tight we can't turn anything. If I loosen all the bolts of the reduction cover things start to loosen and I can turn the crank. When I tighten the cover back up everything seizes up again.
Any one have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or what problem to look for?
Thanks, Jim

You have to loosen up the dust shield bolts and center it to the pulley/operating sleeve. Slide pulley onto crankshaft and lightly tap the dust shield with a rubber hammer until you find the best spot for no rubbing and the pulley turns freely. Then carefully remove the pulley and tighten the dust shield bolts and lock wire them. Can't remember for sure if the 630 uses lock wire in those bolts ?
You have to have the reduction cover tight first. It goes onto dowel pins so it should not change position when loosened unless you had it really loose ?

That did the trick. Dumb of me not to realize that. Thanks, you saved a few hairs on my head. This forum is so useful.
Thanks to all that contribute!

1st. Thing was left piston was rusted in place. Then we found the right side main on the outside half was all gummed up with crud because of the plugged oil line packing on the main housing. We are going to run with just cleaning everything up good and putting it back together and see what happens. Everything seems to be going together solid. Tractor will not be doing heavy work as it is part of a family collection and funds are tight at this time.
Wish us luck and thanks again.
