I'm doing an inframe rebuild of a John Deere 2640. Today I removed the rod bearings and checked them with plastigauge. The book says the gap on the rod bearings is supposed to be between 0.0015 and 0.0045. Most of mine were showing near 0.002, with none more than 0.003.
Some of the bearings had a visible streak or two, but I could not feel anything when I drug my fingernail across it. On one bearing I could very, very, very slightly feel my fingernail hit in one spot. Otherwise they were all seemingly in good shape.
I've heard different opinions on whether to keep the old rod bearings or replace with new. My current thought is to put the old ones back in rather than possibly invite trouble with new ones. Cost of the bearings is not an issue compared to all the labor to do the job.
I'm looking for knowledgeable opinions.......keep old bearings or replace?
