positive ground or negative ground, 6 volt or 12 volt

Hello All. If I came across an old Farmall C tractor without a battery installed, how would I know if it needed a 6 volt or 12 volt battery. Also, how would I know if it was set for a positive ground or a negative ground? Thanks in advance!

It was born 6 volt positive ground. No telling what changes may have been made over the years. Here are some clues that might help to determine.

If it now has alternator it is most likely 12 volt negative ground, starter will work 6 or 12 volt negative or positive ground.

If it still has a generator it is likely still 6 volt positive ground but no guarantees.

If it has a distributor, + of coil to side of distributor would indicate positive ground, -- to side of distributor would indicate negative ground

If it has lights are they 6 or 12 volt?

Check battery cables. Larger diameter clamp should be positive, smaller diameter negative so see how they connect, but again no guarantees as a lot could have been changed over the years.

If it has generator check the regulator for voltage or polarity markings. If it is a Delco generator, black tag indicated 6 volts, red tag indicates 12 volts

Hey Virgil, sounds like you have some knowledge of Model C stuff. Would you mind looking at my post today? (AC Model C won't start-01 July) Thanks. Carl
