Farmall :C: plugs fouling quickly and bad!

Hello Folks. After cleaning the spark plugs they become fouled with heavy deposits of black soot quickly. Also, the engine oil becomes dirty soon after changing. I do not think this engine has ever been worked on before. Could someone give a guide line as to what probably needs to be done to correct this to help me get started? Thanks to all!

When was the last time you checked the air cleaner oil cup and cleaned it out and dumped the mud/water out of it??
Black and sooty say it is running way to rich so if it has an adjustable main jet try turning it in a turn or so.
Also if your running a champ plug you might want to try a KGK plug in the same heat range or a step hotter

Good questions, here are my thoughts:

1) If the plug deposits are a flat black dry sooty color that sounds like the carb and fuel to air mixture IS TOO RICH and needs to be leaned out. If its too rich (carb adjustments or choke) you get excess black smoke out the stack

Make sure the choke is full open
Make sure the air cleaner and bowl isn't full of crud and dust and dirt and water etc
Try adjusting the carbs power and idle jets in leaner so there's no excess black smoke out the stack
Use T stat or radiator air deflectors to get the engine temp up to at least 170 to 190 or so

2) If the plug deposits are a wet shiny black that could be oil burning due to worn rings

Is there blue smoke out the stack??? That means she's an oil burner and may need an overhaul
Low compression is also a sign or worn rings or bad valves and she may need a major overhaul
Leaky valve guides can also allow oil burning and blue smoke

It can help reduce plug fouling if you use HOTTER plugs and a good fresh tune up with points and condenser and cap and rotor and hotter plugs and new plug wires can help

Best wishes

Double check the air cleaner. Most have a wire mesh or horse hair element located above the oil reservoir. It needs to be periodically disassembled and cleaned.

Also check for mouse nests, acorns, mud daubers, anything that can mysteriously find it's way inside the tube.

If it has a Carter carb. throw it in the trash and get a new Zenith. Sounds rich, too much gas, not enough air, check your air cleaner first.
