5240 grinding in reverse

Hello,
Not sure if I'm in the right place but I'll give it a shot anyways. I have a 94' 5240 I recently bought as a chore/baling tractor. It worked good for us all winter but recently when it's shifted into reverse and the clutch is let up there is a grinding noise. The other day moving bales it stopped working complete when shifting from foward to reverse and a solid transmission light came on. Shifted the range to neutral and the light went out and I carried on. Thanks in advance for any help you can give

A little research shows that CIH made a 5240. I am guessing that it has a 3-4 speed powershift. I will guess a bad clutch pack seal in the transmission. You will need to get a manual and perform pressure tests.

Your tractor has the shuttle shift (forward/reverse) on the steering column? if so it may be like my CaseIH MXM130.
It has a "potentiometer" that shifts the transmission from forward to reverse. The potentiometer has two little "plastic" points that wear off in time. then the transmission will not shift fully into gear, and will grind, and eventually not shift at all.
I have to replace this piece of garbage about twice a year. Of course CaseIH wouldn't think of maybe making the points out of steel???? This way they can sell potentiometers at $130.00 a pop.

Actually, I had a look at your tractors parts books. Your tractor doesn't have the potentiometers. But you have some electrical switches in the steering column that control the forward/reverse (part # 144631a1). I would ask your Case dealer if they could be causing some trouble?
The potentiometer on my tractor is under the cab, on the side of the transmission.
