John Deere Rod Cap Screws

OK, so I'm fairly mechanical and my JD 2640 engine needs new sleeves and pistons, so I decided to do it myself. Partly because I just wanted to do it for the challenge.

So today I start to remove the rod caps and bearings, and lo and behold, the rod cap bolts are not regular hex shape. They are some sort of star shape. So, I know this must be a newbie question, but.......

......what's the deal with the star shaped bolts? What exact socket style do I need? The main bearing caps are regular hex bolts, but the rod caps are star shaped.

When I was at the tractor my phone had run out of gas so I couldn't get a photo. But upon doing some research, I'm guessing these bolts are called Double Square. I'll have to get a set of sockets for them. Maybe they're old hat to yall, but to me they are new.

Does anyone know if these are original to the tractor? If not, then it tells me someone did a rebuild on it since it was new.

Every 2630 or 40 I have ever been into uses a standard 12Pt socket. Make sure the new kit you get has these bolts new. The new ones have been changed to torque to yield.

Double square would be 8 point, triple
square would be 12 point, which is
different angles than standard 12 point.
Most internal engine bolts of that era
were 12 point, basically double hex
