the generator has gone real bad, need to know what the numbers are for the generator and also what kind and number for an alternator and wiring info. thanks chuck

In the long run switching it to an alternator will most likely save you $$. I use an alternator made for a 1980 Chev pickup. NO A/C no power anything and cost is around $50. As for wire it that is easy also. Charge wire goes to the amp meter load side then the #1 wire goes to the ignition switch the side that is hot when turned on and the #2 wire goes to the charge stud on the alternator

If you are trying to keep it original, take the generator in and have it rebuilt.

If you're looking to convert it to an alternator, a Delco 10SI is the most popular. You will need to modify or make a new mount bracket. Pulley size and alignment are critical.

There are 2 options for the wiring. For a few dollars more you can get a "one wire" alternator. It only requires a single #10 wire from the alternator to the amp gauge or battery. If yours is a diesel without an ignition switch, that would be the one to use. Or you can use a standard 3 wire alternator. You will need a harness plug, available at the auto supply. Search "10SI wiring diagram" for wiring instructions. Easy install, but does require a switched circuit.

If yours is a 6 volt gas, it would have been positive ground. You will need to change to negative ground for an alternator.
