cracked block repaired by welding plate

there is a local tractor firm that has repaired a cracked engine block by welding a plate over crack
how long will it last?

What's the tractor? A neighbor bought a 400 Farmall at the sale in Archbold one time. It was an early one and from what I was told, they didn't have enough main bearings in those early ones.(?) Supposedly they cracked because of it. There was a patch on the block in that one. It was still going when he had his auction.

The Farmall 400 gas always had 3 main bearings, no matter if it was early or late and the diesel version always had 5 main bearings no matter if it was early or late in production.

Really need a lot more information...

What kind of crack?

Freeze crack?

Structural crack?

Heat crack?

Blown engine crack?

There are many causes, not many "good" solutions. If the engine is still in the tractor, and it's been repaired, and it's holding... Looks like it's fixed.

If you are considering buying this tractor with a welded block, RUN AWAY! Not only is it a potential problem, it lowers the value to near scrap price IMHO.

If this is a gas tractor, those blocks are plentiful and reasonably priced. Diesel is going to be much more costly.

Lot depends on where the crack is and how weldable the block is and how talented the welder is. You could have two identical blocks and one would weld well and the other terrible.
