When wiring 1964 ford 4000 for 12 volt . The alternator has 3 wire, the battery wire goes to hot side of solenoid, a short red wire leaves battery side of alternator and plugs in to the ( F ) plug on alternator . The wire that leaves alternator ( R ) plug I believe would go to voltage regulator, but this tractor was wired 12 volt but wire from (r) plug was tied into the coil wire from switch so you had to cut fuel off to shut off tractor . This tractor has no regulator . So need help to where to run wire from (R ) terminal on 3 wire alternator

What alternator do you have?

Do you have an Ammeter, Volt meter, or light as your charge indicator?

If alternator is a Delco with the R and F (or 1 and 2) terminals horizontal along outer edge of alternator it is internal regulated. IF it has Ammeter or Volt Meter simply add a diode (3amps @50 volts) in the wire from R terminal to coil, marked band toward alternator. This will prevent back feed and allow engine to shut down when switch is turned off.

If you have a lamp indicator, one side of lamp goes to switched side of ignition switch. Disconnect wire from coil and connect to output of the light.

If you have a Delco alternator with the R and F pins vertical on back side of alternator it requires an external regulator. If you have this remove it and replace with a Delco 3 wire internal regulated and connect as above

If you can do so safely when you try to turn it off pull the R wire and see if it will kill the engine then. If it does install a simple ballast resister like the one I get from O'Reilly's VR-1 in that wire and it should fix your problem

if this is a delco three wire unit. you need to find a pigtail plug with a diode in line. The wire with the diode connects to the
key switch.

NO it is the excite wire and if the alternator never gets excited it will NEVER charge
