mazda b2500 engine puzzle

I live in the UK and me and my live on a 68 acre rented farm and we have had notice to get out as I said couple of weeks ago but that is not what I want to mention now.. our farm truck is a 16 year old mazda b2500 4x4 non turbo diesel with nearly 130,000 miles on the clock it goes well but I am baffled by one thing .. when I change engine oil if I keep the level near to the bottom or min mark it goes a lot better than if I fill up to the top or max mark can anyone explain this also we are having a meeting on Monday with legal lady to discuss our eviction notice

thanks for reply but I believe the dipstick is correct as when I put correct amount of oil in according to handbook the level is up to top mark

Some engines of various brands will do that, they use oil until near the add mark and then use very little more beyond that point.
