trying to figure out why my tractor will not start. need help!!
tractor sat for 5mos without me touching it.ran fine cranked fine before that. went to start it and nothing.checked the battery it was dead would not hold a charge.i replaced the battery and I still get nothing wont turn over I can jump the solenoid and it turns over. but nothing from the start button. got any ideas?

Someone down on the 8N board below can give a specific answer, but typically look for problems with the neutral switch, start switch, ignition switch, mouse chewed wiring, corroded connections...

A test light will eliminate the guess work. Just start tracing where you have power and where you don't when you should. The wiring is simple and straight forward.

Take an jump from the small post on the solenoid to ground. Be 1000% sure it is out of gear. If it turns over then you have a bad starter button of the wire from the button to the solenoid is bad. If it does not turn over that way the solenoid is bad

One time a guy here in town could get his pickup to start after changing the battery. He forgot to remove the black plastic cover
on the negative battery post.

I used to have that same tractor, its been a while but as i recall it was a positive ground system. Not sure what it does if you hook it up negative ground but might want to check it.

(quoted from post at 20:22:53 04/08/16) I used to have that same tractor, its been a while but as i recall it was a positive ground system. Not sure what it does if you hook it up negative ground but might want to check it.

I have a similar problem - no spark. Because the electrical system was ignored for many years, and because my son put a 12 volt hot-shot on a 6 volt system, I replaced the points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap, coil (which was leaking some goo), spark plug wires and spark plugs. Still no spark. After extensive work with a multimeter (with help from an electrical engineer friend) we tracked the problem to a defective ignition resistor that I purchased (from yesterdays tractors of course) and installed. Eureka - spark and the tractor started! After putting everything back together the problem returned and now I am more puzzled than ever.

So now I have to test the resistor to make certain it is not defective, and if not then what? I've checked each wire in the ignition system and there is continuity in all the circuits. I am flummoxed. The only element of the ignition system I have not replaced is the voltage regulator but I don't think that would prevent a spark even if it were bad.

Any ideas?

Go to the ford site a lot helpful folks over there also look at the 75 tips they have compiled for the fords.
Best of luck Byron
