I bought this machine not running...previous owner had changed out the generator to an alternator...it had no battery so I am unsure if he converted to 12v? Also don't know if + ground changed to - ground...ANY IDEAS TO CLEAR UP MY MYSTERY

If it is an alternator your ground cable will go onto the frame work. Positive side will go to your switch. if your coil is still 6volt you need to put a resister in the wire to the coil. The starter will work fine. I always use the 5 second rule on my starters. If it doesn't start in 5 seconds I stop the starter. I used to mess with those 4c crawlers. they start very easy if properly tuned. I would have to look but I think I have a starter for the 40/420 crawler. norm

40 C what? In 1940 it could have been magneto or distributor. An alternator would be 12 volt which would mean to was changed to a 12 volt system for charging and lights. It would have only been changed to 12 volt ignition if it has a distributor. If it has a magneto the 12 volt would not be connected to it and will run without a battery of any kind or voltage. When changing a 6 volt tractor to 12 volt I never change the starter.
