I have a Farmall M that was passed down to me this year. Ive got it up and running (the condition required to be passed to me instead of the junk yard) with some tune up, a lot of new wiring, and some sweat.
Anyway, its cold in Minnesota right now and the once hard to engage pto has become completely useless. It cannot be engaged at all, or not without immediately slipping out. I tore the whole assembly out to see the sights after reading many different posts and this is what I found.....
The outer shaft does move forward and back, and the teeth are a bit marred but not the problem. Instead I found that the metal block that fits in the groove or collar at the rear of the shaft, that is attached to the lever for engaging or disengaging, is worn to the point that it simply slides over the collar. ( i tried tightening the worm nut that holds in the tension spring, it is definitely this block that is worn)
I have attached a link to a diagram (from the pto shift lever) from Bates Corp. website. The part I need is #17, but where do I find it? Also, how to I disassemble this part of the assembly? (The frozen muck that was supposed to be trans oil didnt help me diagnose things on a snowy 5 degree morning)
Thanks for your help and knowledge!
Click on the link, then the parts diagram is a small white box under the main picture.
