6v / 12v Fordson Super Dexta

I have a Fordson Super Dexta with the diesel engine and not sure if it has a 6v or 12v electrical system. It came with a 12v deep cycle battery but turns over like its a 6v system. Model number is 957E-7005. It has the original generator. If its a 6v system with a 12v battery would like to convert it over and switch to a modern alternator. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Looking at the specs from Tractor Data, it shows to be a 12v system, two 6v batteries connected in series, positive ground.

One good, high cranking amp 12v battery should be all you need. The "deep cycle" battery is not what you want to start a diesel.

To convert it, switch it over to negative ground, install an alternator of your choice. The most popular is a 10si Delco. You can get them with a "one wire" connection for simple wiring. Just connect the single wire, using #10 wire, to the positive battery cable where it connects to the starter solenoid. Remove all the old generator and regulator wiring.

According to tractor data.com it was originally 2 six volt batteries tied together to give 12 volts. As for the generator it's probably 12 volt but you can google the number on the generator to check for sure.

I'm guessing the generator doesn't work and your battery is not fully charged. That's why it cranks like a six volt system.

A deep cycle battery is made to be ran down completely dead and then recharged.
