carb issues

Good day all. Hope you all had a great holiday'. I have a 1949 Farmal C. I
posted message a while back. I finally got the hydraulics running. We also
installed a new Carb kit. It runs not too bad but when you start putting strain
on the engine it starts running rough, surging and sometimes pushing flames
out the exhaust. Any suggestions? I am obviously new at this so be patient.
Thanks

Any associated smoke?

Black smoke would be too rich. Try a test run with the air cleaner disconnected, check that the choke is fully open, check the high speed jet setting.

White smoke can be unburned fuel. Check the ignition system, could be weak spark, slow timing, points out of adjustment, bad plugs.

Fire should not be coming out the exhaust or intake. Do a compression check to check for a burnt valve and check the timing.

Could be a timing problem or a carb problem. When it surges does choking it hurt or help. If it helps good chance it is running to lean, if it hurts running to rich. Also when was the last time you cleaned to air cleans oil cup??
