Buda WTU 4 cylinder - What should the compression be?

Hello again!
I have a 1926 Gotfredson flat bed with a 4 cylinder Buda WTU engine at 226 cubic inches.

Just did a compression test and all four cylinders come back between 38 and 40 psi.

I am happy all the cylinders are the same, but 40 psi seems a bit low. No significant smoke coming from the tail pipe.

What do you think? Is 40 psi normal for this vintage engine?

Thanks in advance!

L heads do have lower compression. 40 does sound low. Was that with oil added to each cylinder? Valves may be leaking a little, they can lose a lot more compression at cranking speeds than running. Does it have electric start, or was this hand cranking?

Just for giggles, do a compression check on something else and see what the tester indicates.

Also, we did not add oil to the cylinders. Since all cylinders were pretty even at 38, 40, 40, 40... I did not think the rings would be equally bad on all cylinders so I did not add oil.

It was done on a warm engine.

I would suspect that the cylinders are dry after sitting so long, put a little oil in try again.

Yes throttle open. I just spoke to someone who told me this is a low compression engine that probably only had 45 psi brand new. Still trying to confirm. Thanks for the info and comments.

I was just reading some info on a Model T Ford engine, a low compression engine and a contemporary to yours.

Compression of 40 to 45 lbs was considered normal, up to 55 pounds with an aftermarket high-compression cylinder head.
