Hercules JXD Timing

Hey guys I am new to this forum. We have purchased a Corley Saw Mill and it had a Herucles JXD 6 cylinder power unit. The gentleman told me that we would need to set the timing. We found a manual online but it is still a little unclear on exactly how to. We have turned the egnine over and have foubnd the mark on the flywheel through the timing hole which we think is it. It is an arrow painted on the flywheel. I understand the we need to have the number 1 cylinder top dead. If anyone can give me any help that knows more about this engine would be great.

Was the engine in running order when you bought it?

Does it have have magneto or Kettering ignition?
