620 governor housing

Anyone familiar with internal parts of 620 tractor governor housing? I'm trying to move the left side drive gear, slightly.

I got both old plastic tach gears out..FINALLY! If I can slide the governor shaft to the left about 1/2", the new one will fit in. Thoughts?

I replaced the gear on my 720 gas

-remove the cap from the distributor
-drill a small 1/8 hole in the 2 or 2-1/4 inch welsh plug
-screw a metal screw in hole and pry out welsh plug with j bar
-remove cover from left side of governor housing
-pull governor drive gear to the left
-remove old plastic tach drive gear
-grease shaft of gear assembly and install new gear
-push governor shaft in slowly to mesh plastic driven gear with teeth on governor shaft
-make sure gasket on governor is still good -or -replace with same thickness gasket/shim
-reinstall cover
-braze hole shut that was drilled in welsh plug if it is re-usable -hammer center of plug out into a concave shape
-re-install welsh plug and tighten with hammer striking center of plug
-install tach cable
-replace distributor cap

Hello. Yes, this is the post instructions I'm using. I'm stuck at the "pull governor gear to the left" stage. It seems to be held in place by the internal fork assembly. If I could slide the shaft out 1/2", I'd have it made!

I wonder and some times it gets me in deeper trouble. So if you try my next suggestion/ you will be doing so at your own risk     Have you disconnected the governor arm from the rod that actuates it? It may allow the internal fork to rotate around a little further, allowing the gear to move out the 1/2 " he is referring to. From the pictures in the JD online parts diagrams it does not look like any thing should fall apart. Again I'm not sure this will work or if things may fall apart, as the right end of the shaft may drop down, but that would be my next move.. worst case you may need to remove the whole housing and turn it over to see what's holding it from sliding over. Hope my wondering don't get you into deeper trouble..

I SHARE your fear! I have a minor problem now, don't want a MAJOR one. Tractor works REALLY good, and hate to mess that up. It does appear the fork limits its travel. The shaft has a couple bearings it slides in to. The governor drive-gear holds it up on left side, and governor/bearing holds shaft up on right side, so I don't "THINK" (my wife's exact quote!) it should fall down. I'll slowly attempt this.
