8N starter part in flywheel/clutch compartment

The gear on the starter bendix broke and half of the gear (3/4 x 1 1/8) dropped into the flywheel/clutch compartment of my 1949 8N.
Will it damage the flywheel gear or clutch if left in?
How do I get it out (a magnet through the starter access does not work)?
If I remove the engine pan will that give me access to the flywheel/clutch compartment?
Any suggestions

If you post this over on the N-specific Forum, or search the archives there, you will find two schools of thought, many say there's room for the spare parts in the flywheel housing and the chance of damage is small, and others say it HAS to come out, and one guy has posted a photo of a hole whacked in the bellhousing, SUPPOSEDLY by just what has happened to your tractor.

Some have claimed the parts can be fished out through the starter hole with a "snake" magnet, but I have never personally tried that, so I cannot comment.

If the oil pan and rear seal are relatively leak-free I would not even consider removing the oil pan, and I'm not sure you could even fish the parts out if you did.

The conventional way to get access to the flywheel housing is to split the tractor at the rear of the engine.

Know a guy that replaced a starter on a Farmall H. He didn't remove the broken nose and sheared all the pressure plate fingers off. When I split my Super M I found some chewed up starter parts that didn't appear to hurt anything.
