I'm not even sure what these rafters are called but seem to be very strong , barn doesn't sag a bit and has steel roof , am just wondering if its economical to turn into shop storage ? its 40' clearspan , Thanks

The reason it does not sag is because of the good condition of the floor and its structural members. Those floor joists and floor ing hold the sidewall together. As long as the side to side structure is intact roof cannot sag as long as rafters are in good condition. I do not think you can move the hay mow floor up, the "weak" point iswhere the top of the wall and the bottom of the arched rafters meet. just my opinion, good luck gobble

Our shop has a 40 ' free span. I would advise steel. Ours has steel trusses, you could use I beam I guess. Then it has 16' 2 x 6 between and corrugated roofing tin screwed to the bottom. We have 24' of fiberglass insulation bats on top of it with no sagging problems.

We haved raised lofts in these if this is a half circle roof .
This job is not the rookie to do with out a very good strucual
engineer or a old time experianced carpenter . Not only do you
whant it to stay straight you do not whant it falling on you .
I would turn it into a bank barn first and use the loft for a
shop . The lower area probly 7' high is still usefull.

I had thought about running some cables across where the ceiling would be , was thinking that might be enough support to keep the walls from spreading out , was hoping to be able put a false ceiling with insulation in about or 8 ft up from the floor of the haymow and then remove the floor that would give me about 14-15 ft and hopefully room to get a combine in , oh an add a few lights too lol

My neighbor turned a hip roof barn into a shop 20 years ago and it is still standing proud. I have never been in it to see how they tied things together.
